Hormel Foods has set its standards high by placing a focus on being a responsible food manufacturer. The public corporation has now released their fifth report focused on corporate responsibility. Hormel Foods has set five-year environmental goals and have reached and surpassed previously set goals. Their 2011 report explains that they have surpassed their goals set in water reduction and in waste minimization. Their work has paid off and has set them in the world’s top 10 percent of sustainable companies according to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Hormel has taken part in the Environmental Sustainability Best of the Best competition and has achieved incredible results along with many other companies in reducing 695.2 tons of solid waste to landfill, an increase in recycling tonnage by 27 percent and more than 40.4 million gallons of water saved. In aligning their philanthropic commitments and launch of this report, Hormel created an online contest by taking advantage of technology trends in marketing. Using Twitter, Hormel promised to donate $6 for every re-tweet about the Corporate Responsibility Report to Feeding America.
